Tbilisi Cancer Center (TCC) has started functioning in February 2005. TCC has two main directions:

  1. Establishment of Population-based On-line Cancer Registry and the creation of Tbilisi Health/ Cancer Information Network (HCIN). Unfortunately these directions have temporary funding problems, but we hope we will set it up and proceed creation of population-based cancer registry.

  2. Implementation of the screening-diagnostic programs in the cancer high risk groups in Tbilisi. The Program of the Early Detection and Prevention of Cervical Cancer among Tbilisi Population (age 25-60) and Breast Cancer screening (age 40-70)

Tbilisi Cancer Center carried out above mentioned prevention programs co-financed by the Tbilisi Municipality and the UNFPA. The UNFPA evaluated the TCC cancer prevention activities as the most successful program among the health-care projects implemented in the Eastern Europe and the Caucasus region in 2008. The detailed information about these projects together with the UNFPA reports on the Tbilisi Cancer Center activities (written by UN experts) you can find on UN website . In May 2008 in Georgia was established the National Screening Centre. Its function was to develop and improve cancer prevention programs, where TCC is actively integrated. TCC is ECCA member and in 2009 this program had received European Parliament award –pearl of wisdom.

The firs lady of Georgia, Sandra Rulovs has been actively involved in health-care programs performed in Georgia , among them is cancer prevention program. She is a head of reproductive diseases council. From 2010 she became The President of ECCA . This fact pushed the development of screening-diagnostic programs in our country and the satellite centers were opened in Tbilisi and in some regions of Georgia.

The epidemiological analysis of the causes of cancer mortality in the population of Tbilisi within 2002-2004 was performed on a basis of the Tbilisi Cancer Center. The research proved once more that almost half of the cases (45,8%) of women’s death in Tbilisi is caused by cancer of the reproductive system.

The center successfully realized its tasks in 2004-2209. Over 20000 patient have been examined at the clinic by now. 3739 cases of pre- cancer diseases and 401 cases of cancer have been early detected and, accordingly, this number of patients has avoided the progress and burden of the disease through complex medical treatment. In the near future our goal is to realize the Cervical Cancer National program.
